Monthly sessions focused on improving riding skills

Track work riders in South Australia who would like some extra support and training, or are interested in becoming a jockey, are encouraged to join Racing SA’s Track Rider Professional Development Program.

Sessions are held once a month at Morphettville and are open to all riders across the state who are already up and going.

“If you’re riding track work in South Australia and want a little bit of help and support, we’re putting our resources towards that,” said Racing SA Apprentice Academy Master Briony Moore.

“This program is a pathway into the Racing SA Apprentice Academy, but it’s not just for riders who want to be apprentices.

“We also hope to help track riders decide what they want to do with their careers. This is about fine-tuning their riding, and helping to give them a broader knowledge of racing that perhaps they wouldn’t just get in a stable.”

The Track Rider Professional Development Program is free of charge and utilises the vast industry experience within Racing SA.

Racing SA Jockey Coach Dean Pettit, Equine Welfare Officer John Cornell, Industry Development and Training Officer Clare Lindop, along with Moore, will all share their wisdom about different aspects of the industry.

“We will do small snap shots of many different aspects and areas of the industry including race reviews, technical riding skills and styles and fitness training. We’ll finish the sessions on the mechanical horse, so that we can send participants home with a picture of the style they’re working towards.

“We always hope to give our riders something to walk away with and keep building on, and we’ll follow up with them at jump-outs during the month,” Moore said.

“Along with the technical side of things we’ll also give participants exposure to different aspects of the industry such as media training, careers in racing, and we’ll hear from vets and equine chiropractors, and also sports psyhologists to help with the mental side of things.

“Lunch is provided on the day, and we really hope that this program provides a strong foundation for all our track riders in the state.”
