Weekend Wrap: Kemalpasa stars, Resurge claims Strathalbyn Cup

Top class sprinter Kemalpasa added a second Listed Durbridge Stakes to his resume upsetting Behemoth in the 1100m feature at Morphettville on Saturday on the back of a tactically brilliant ride by top jockey Paul Gatt.

Gatt was able to pinch a midrace breather and leave enough in the locker to out sprint the odds-on favourite in the run to the line to bring up the gelding's 13th win from 37 starts.

“I had to try something different and when we found the front, I thought I’d try and go as a slow as possible and then try and out-sprint the big boy,’’ Gatt said.

“It worked out well, it was a nice result,’’ he said.

Murray Bridge gelding Montign continued his rapid rise with a third successive metropolitan win for traner Stuart Padman when he was too good for Irish Playboy.

Ryan Hurdle took riding honours with a Morphettville double aboard Harleymoven and Spin The Reward.

Durbridge winning rider Paul Gatt took his brilliant form to Strathalbyn with a winning double on Sunday, while Campbell Rawiller got his South Australian career rolling with a win aboard Semyorka for Ryan Balfour in the opening race.

But the day’s feature belonged to the Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained Resurge who continued his solid form to make it two wins on end in the $107,250 Strathalbyn Cup.

Tried in Derby company as a three-year-old, Resurge was ridden patiently off the speed by Barend Vorster before joining in smartly around the home turn with the pair able to hold off Dexter You Devil in the run to the line and record the first leg of a race to race double for Vorster who claimed the last aboard Go Boo Boo for local trainer Emma Hubbard.
