Quorn Cup Preview

The final Country Cup of the winter will take place this Saturday as we head to the quaint country town of Quorn.

The outcome of the race could also have a huge impact on the current Outback Cups Championship Series which sees the Kyle McKerlie trained Dance of Heroes a big chance to claim top spot after Saturday which is the penultimate race in the Series.

Dance of Heroes claimed the Hawker Cup earlier in the season before producing a huge win in BM82 grade at Gawler in July. Since that win his last three runs have been a bit poor but he’s definitely one of the classier runners in the field. He’s also in the right stable with McKerlie training 11 winners in her last 50 starts which included a double at Port Augusta two weeks back.

The top weight in the race will be the well-travelled It’s Humphrey who won last year’s Penong and Streaky Bay Cups. He was first-up in the Roxby Downs Cup last start where he finished well back in last place. The 4kg claim from apprentice Lachlan Neindorf will put him right in this race and he also has a solid second-up record with two wins from six starts.

The in-form horse in the field is Dennis McMahon’s five-year-old Bam. He was a last start winner over 1867m at Port Augusta and has also won three of his last six starts. He also gets the in-form Jerry Chau aboard who’s striking at 15% in his last 50 rides. He looks nicely weighted and should be the one to follow.

Another horse who is running well without a lot of luck is Uncle Kenneth. He’s been runner-up in his last three starts and in his last two he’s lost by less than a length combined. His second placings in the Roxby Downs Cup and last start against Bam look like pretty good form lines for this. He’ll be ridden by Alice Lindsay who rode two winners here on Cup Day last year.

It looks unlikely that Sagaab will take his place in the field after also accepting at Morphettville on Saturday but if he did this would be his first run on the dirt. He hasn’t won since March 2018 but trainer Travis Doudle had a Cup Day winner here last year with Tilbury.

Last year’s Cup winning jockey Dean McWhinney will take the ride on Sue Nolan’s Aldolphin who claimed the 2018 Port Augusta Cup. That was his last race win and probably looks tested on recent form as does the Roxby Downs Cup placegetter Northset and former Mick Price trained Savvy Dresser.

Selections: 1. Bam 2. Dance of Heroes 3. Uncle Kenneth
