Wolf Blass Rascals Cup Preview

The Wolf Blass Rascals Cup is the feature of a nine race card today at the Gawler and Barossa Jockey Club.  A field of 10 is set to do battle over the 2138m. Today's feature race includes some up and coming stayers who will be out to impress in the lead up to the spring racing carnival.

The Tony McEvoy trained More Than Ever is the $2.10 favourite with TAB for the feature. Although never winning beyond 1850m, Tony McEvoy looks to have this gelding primed for this run, off the back of his last start 2nd at Gawler on the 5th of June.  The gelding is to be ridden by Barend Vorster from barrier 5, the pair jumped from barrier 5 last time out at Gawler when being narrowly run down over the concluding stages.

The rising eight-year-old Danouli is dropping back from metro BM86 grade. Prepared by John Hickmott, Danouli is to be ridden by Sairyn Fawke, the trainer jockey combination are enjoying a purple patch of form headlined by recently winning the Golden Topaz over the three-day Swan Hill carnival with Crown Fontein. Danouli’s last win was at Gawler on the 7th of July 2018 ridden by Raquel Clark.

Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas have two contenders for this year’s cup, with top weight Soaring High and La La Luchie. The latter, being their leading chance in the race, helped by the 3kg claiming apprentice Jerry Chau who last rode this mare to a win at Balaklava on the 29th of May. Soaring High has had two runs back this campaign both unplaced efforts in town, but over unsuitable trips. Getting out to the 2138m should be a positive for him; Raquel Clark takes the ride from barrier 6.

This year’s edition of the cup is set to be a high quality race with many leading hopes. Whilst no locally on course-trained horses are contesting this year’s event, it still promises to be an excellent race.
