Super Saturday signals the start of a big Carnival

Racing is back in a big way at Morphettville this weekend with five Stakes races all part of a massive day of racing.

Results from Saturday’s five Stakes races will make or break the chances of some Group 1 aspirants as they look forward to the four massive Group 1 races we’re counting down to in May.

Race 1: Listed Dequetteville Stakes

History Says: Five of the last ten winners of the Dequetteville won their last start. Two have won first up but no horse has run worse than fourth in their last start. Interestingly the only two horses this rules out are the Tony McEvoy pair of She Shao Fly and Sisstar.

Hot Horse: Lady Naturaliste – Matt Cumani’s filly justified her favouritism in last month’s Listed Cinderella Stakes with a strong win under the guidance of Raquel Clark. With a month’s freshen up she looks primed to go back to back in Listed grade.

One to Watch: Gentleman’s Words – Lindsay Park and Harry Coffey combine once again to try and go back to back in the Dequetteville Stakes. Last year they won the race aboard Fundamentalist who has gone on to run in the placings in five Group 1 races. If this filly can be anything like Fundamentalist, we might have another superstar on our hands.

Race 5: Listed Port Adelaide Guineas

History Says: No horse has finished worse than fourth in their previous start before winning the Guineas. Five of them were last start winners. This rules out six of the 19 runners in the field for Saturday which looks to be anyone’s race.

Hot Horse: Tongsai Boss – John Hyam’s gelding has won two on the trot now which included an impressive win at Moonee Valley last month. He returned to Adelaide last start with a narrow win over a couple of his rivals on Saturday and now gets the services of champion jockey Dwayne Dunn.

One to Watch: Firstclass Dreamer – Already contested three Stakes races in his career including a last start run in the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes at Rosehill. While he finished last in that race it was on a Heavy 10 and should improve on better ground. Was also runner up in last year’s Listed Oaklands Plate on the Parks track, beating home Tongsai Boss.

Race 6: Group 3 RN Irwin Stakes

History Says: The mares have won six of the last ten editions of this race. Five mares line up in Saturday’s edition and probably look the stronger chances again. Driefontein was the last mare to win the Irwin and then the Group Sangster back in 2014.

Hot Horse: Cool Passion – She may not have a win to her name this preparation but she put in an almighty run in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes in her last start. She finished fourth there behind Trapeze Artist and Shoals. A drop back in distance and grade sees her in this race up to her eyeballs.

One to Watch: I’ll Have a Bit – Ran third in last year’s Group 1 Goodwood here and has two Stakes victories to her name at Morphettville. Her last three starts have been at Group 1 level against some superstar horses and will a huge chance to add another feature to her name on Saturday.

Race 7: Group 3 Auraria Stakes

History Says: Three of the last four winners of the Auraria Stakes have come out of the Listed Laelia Stakes. Only six of the nineteen runners in Saturday’s field contested the Laelia including the winning quinella of Cosmic Alert and So We Are.

Hot Horse: Cosmic Alert - It has to be the Listed Laelia winner. She was impressive winning her last start by one length. The Auraria has been a great race for her jockey Todd Pannell over the years with the jockey going back to back in Group 3 in 2015 and 2016. He’ll have a great chance to make it three wins on Saturday.

One to Watch: Sizzleme – Probably the best credentialed horse in the race. She was only two lengths off Group 1 winners Verry Elleegant and Aristia in the Group 3 Ethereal Stakes last spring before running sixth in the Group 1 VRC Oaks. Just missed the talented Mr Quickie last start but the extra distance will suit her to a tee on Saturday.

Race 8: Listed Redelva Stakes

History Says: Follow Tony McEvoy. The leading South Australian trainer has won two of the last three editions of this race with Don’t Doubt Mamma and Despatch and amazingly the 2017 winner, Desert Lashes is now a part of his stable too. He has three chances in the race on Saturday with Beauty, Lake District Girl and Vietti.

Hot Horse: Anjana – The super talented filly is in red hot form winning her last two starts over some high quality opposition. Her fourth placing in last year’s Thousand Guineas shows she has some serious class and Mick Price always has to be respected when he brings his horses to Adelaide.

One to Watch: Humma Humma – Last year’s Listed Cinderella Stakes runner-up, the John McArdle trained filly has five Stakes placings to her name and looks ready to finally breakthrough for her first black type victory. Was only a length off Sunlight last year and we know how good she is!
