2018 Heiniger Balaklava Cup

Next Wednesday September 12 is Heiniger Balaklava Cup day. One of the most popular days on the South Australian Racing Calendar, the township of Balaklava has a population of around 2000 people, yet the Balaklava Racing Club will host a crowd of around five times that number for their feature raceday.

Amongst those trackside this year will be prominent Queensland racing identities Bart Sinclair OAM and David Fowler. Bart was awarded his Order Of Australia Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List this year for his services to horse racing. Bart spent 43 years working as a racing journalist, firstly with The Australian, followed by the Sunday Sun, the Daily Sun, before finishing his career with the Courier Mail in 2012. Since his retirement from the paper, Bart has worked as Racing Manager for the Brisbane Racing Club.

Joining Bart from Brisbane trackside at Balaklava will be RadioTab’s number one racecaller in Queensland David Fowler. David, like Bart has forged a long successful career in horse racing. David is highly regarded as one of the Nation’s leading broadcasters and is also Chairman of the Albion Park Harness Racing Club in Brisbane. A regular visitor to South Australia and their racetracks David has built some strong friendships in South Australian racing, including Wayne Henson, the Chairman of the Balaklava Racing Club.

A regular contributor for the Balaklava Racing Club for their Cup day meeting is April Matthews. April is the daughter of former outstanding jockey Alf Matthews who himself rode three Balaklava Cup winners in his brilliant career. Alf’s Balaklava Cup winners were Prince Llaroo in 1973, Prince Plea in 1978 and Khan Son in 1982. April a former jockey herself, will be found behind the microphone on Cup Day helping to build all of the excitement to the raceday patrons.

The Heiniger Balaklava Cup which is run at Listed level, and carrying stakemoney of $100,000 is sure to be a strong race. One likely  contender is Richard Jolly’s promising four year old Modulate. A winner of his last three starts, this will be Modulate’s biggest test to date. A son of Ambidexter, who stands at Cornerstone Stud at Angaston, Modulate will be looking to give Richard Jolly his first success in a Balaklava Cup as a trainer. It is a race Richard was able to win as a jockey, tasting victory in 1992, aboard Weetulta for Allen Smith. Modulate is part owned by Nev Morgan who is no stranger to big race wins. Over the years Nev has raced some wonderful horses such as Rangirangdoo and Kermadec. In South Australia he has won a Group 1 with Richard Jolly, achieving that feat with Kushadasi in the 2014 SA Derby. Karacatis a winner of 11 races and nearly $650,000 was another outstanding performer part owned by Nev Morgan and prepared by Richard Jolly.
