State Trainers Premiership to Come Down to the Wire

Australian Hall of Fame trainer Leon Macdonald and his training partner Andrew Gluyas may have well and truly wrapped up this year’s Metropolitan Premiership but the state title is now in striking distance.

A win in Macdonald’s hometown City of Port Augusta Cup yesterday with Soaring High has now put his stable one win behind Phillip Stokes for statewide honours.

Soaring High was given a beautiful ride by stable jockey Clare Lindop to take out the City of Port Augusta Cup by just over a length to last year’s winner New Empire.

A day earlier, in-form apprentice Raquel Clark gave the Macdonald & Gluyas stable a win at Gawler when she partnered Battle Brewing to an easy 4 length win over his rivals.

Going into the weekend Phillip Stokes had a three-win lead over Macdonald &Gluyas for the season but a weekend double to the latter has seen that lead cut to one win.

Both stables will head to Balaklava on Wednesday where the Stokes yard will be represented by Triage (Race 1) and Hippogriff (Race 5) while Macdonald & Gluyas will have both Clear Class and Vibrance in Race 6.

Looking at the nominations ahead of the meeting at Morphettville on Saturday, Phillip Stokes has seven horses nominated and Macdonald & Gluyas have eight.

With three weeks of racing to go in the season, it’s sure to be a great battle between two of the state’s best stables.
