Super Saturday of Racing on Goodwood Day

While the $1 Million Group 1 Darley Goodwood will be the highlight of Saturday, there are six other sensational black-type races on the card.

For many of these horses it will be their grand final and with big fields and plenty of quality there should be some great value for punters across the board.

Race 2 - Group 3 National Stakes

Black-type racing kicks off in the second race with the Group 3 National Stakes, a race that was won last year by I Am a Star who went on to win the Group 1 Myer Classic later in the year.

Four horses come into the race from the Listed Queen Adelaide Stakes which was won by the Darren Weir trained Indian Thunder. It's a Myth, Mintha and Tabbing all ran behind Indian Thunder on the day and will be hoping to turn the tables on Saturday.

The last four winners of the National have either jumped from barrier one or seven, which could be good news for the Phillip Stokes pair Phelps Glory (1) and It's a Myth (7)

Victorian visitor Pure Scot won her last start at Caulfield in the VOBIS Sires race defeating Danger Deal who ran well in the Group 3 Sires Produces Stakes on the weekend. She will be ridden by Dwayne Dunn who has won the National on three occasions.

No favourites have won the National in the last five years but at the same time there have been no blow-out winners, with Prince of Brooklyn (2015) being the highest priced winner at $11.50 in the last five runnings.

Race 3 - Listed Port Adelaide Cup

Waging War and Docker Pav will be hoping for some luck to go their way in the Listed Port Adelaide Cup after both being late scratchings at the gate in last weekend's Group 1 UBET SA Derby. The drop back in class should make them both good chances in this race and have been installed as $9 and $34 chances with UBET.

The first three in the field in High Church, Grey Lion and Araldo Junior have all come through the Listed Warrnambool Cup which High Church won quite comfortably by six lengths as the $2.50 favourite.

Barriers 4-6 have produced four of the last five winners which will only improve the chances of the favourite High Church (6), while it could also be handy for Docker Pav (5) and Sanima Star (4).

Like the National, there have been no real blow-out winners of the Port Adelaide Cup over the last five years. In 2012 and 2013 the favourites both won, while in 2014 Ominous saluted at $11.80 which was the only double figure winner in the past five editions.

Race 4 - Group 3 SA Fillies Classic

New Zealand visitor Savvy Dreams will be hoping for some better luck in the Group 3 Fillies Classic after being scratched at the barrier in the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks and then being pushed wide for most of the trip to run fourth in the Group 1 SA Derby on the weekend.

She lines up in the field along with Oaks runners, Smart As You Think (8th), Ana Royale (3rd), Pretty Punk (11th) and Tiffany's Lass (4th). Two of the past five winners of the Fillies Classic have come through the Group 1 Oaks; the last being Rezoned who ran eleventh in the Oaks and then won as a $4.20 favourite in the 2014 edition.

She was trained by Robert Smerdon who has won this race three out of the last five times and he has the lightly raced Cedar Grande in Saturday's field who won her last start in Bendigo.

The Michael Moroney trained Lilymorn will be one to watch after smashing her rivals in her last start at Ballarat at the end of April by 3.75 lengths. While that race was a maiden she has only missed a place once in her six start career.

Race 5 - Listed Centaurea Stakes

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained Sort After will start favourite in the Listed Centaurea Stakes after running fourth in the Group 2 Queen of The South Stakes. The Centaurea has been one for the more fancied runners with four of the last five winners saluting at odds of $4 or less. Blue Ribbon in 2014 has been the only horse to cause a major upset when she won at $45.50.

Have Another Glass is the other runner dropping down from the Group 2 Queen of The South Stakes where she ran second while Vandancer from the Michael Moroney yard also comes into the race from Group 2 company last running in the Chairman's Stakes at Randwick.

The Phillip Stokes trained Model Dragon was quite erratic on Schweppes Oaks Day but will regain the services of stable jockey Dom Tourneur who has steered her to three of her four career wins.

Craig Williams has won the past two editions of the Centaurea Stakes on Gabella and Let's Makeadeal and he will ride Exocet for Lee & Anthony Freedman on Saturday.

Race 6 - Group 3 R A Lee Stakes

The last four winners of the R A Lee Stakes won their last start and in Saturday's field there are four last start winners including Royal Rumble who has won three on the trot.

Royal Rumble's trainers Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas know what it takes to win an R A Lee, taking out the race in 2009 and 2010 with stable favourites Serious Speed and Majestic Music. The interstate visitors in Burning Front, Hooked and Rhythm to Spare have all been well supported in the early market.

Like other races on today's card, the R A Lee has historically been one for the more fancied runners with the average winning price over the last five years being $4.30. Last year's winner Tonopah was the longest odds winner in the last five years at $8.10.

Race 8 - Group 3 Proud Miss Stakes

The final race of the card should be an absolute cracker with plenty of great chances in the field even though the early market only suggests there are only two.

Five gallopers who contested the Group 1 UBET Classic will line up in the field on Saturday including Miss Gunpower, Now or Later, Ravi, A Lot of Love and Beautiful Flyer while the Hayes' & Dabernig trained Fuhryk is coming off a second in the Group 2 Euclase Stakes.

Fuhryk ($3.40) and Ravi ($4.50) are the two runners that are well supported in the market while Now or Later ($12) and Telopea ($13) have great second-up records and will be natural improvers.

Phillip Stokes took out last year's Proud Miss Stakes with Runway Star and he has two runners in this year's edition with Group 2 winning filly Samara Dancer ($13) and consistent mare Entrancing ($17)
