A Look at the Lord Reims and Cinderella Stakes

Group Three James Boag’s Premium Lord Reims Stakes Morphettville 2600m

The final traditional hit out before the UBET Adelaide Cup is the Lord Reims Stakes run over 2600m.

The Russell Cameron trained Apache King was the last horse to complete the Lord Reims – Adelaide Cup double in 2001, while Rialya was the last horse to win the Adelaide Cup after running in the Lord Reims in 2012 where he finished second.

Darren Weir has trained the last two winners of the Lord Reims in Signoff and Taiyoo and both started as $1.40 favourites in the race. Taiyoo then went on to run second to Tanby in the 2015 Adelaide Cup. Both of the Weir trained horses came into the Lord Reims out of the Listed 2500m Torney Night Cup at Moonee Valley. Weir has one runner in the Lord Reims this year in Master of Arts who has followed the same formula coming through the Torney Night Cup.

Other horses in the Lord Reims field coming through the Torney Night Cup are Big Memory and Puccini.

The other key lead up race for the Lord Reims in the past has been the Listed Birthday Cup which was won impressively by the Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas trained Mail It In. Other runners from the Birthday Cup to run in the Lord Reims are Jim’s Journey and Bullitt County.

Five of the past six winners of the Lord Reims have placed in their last start, proving that winning form is good form. Four starters on Saturday placed in their last race including Exalted Lightning, Mail It In, Tessabelle and Tunes.

All runners apart from Spur on Gold and Big Memory are nominated for the Adelaide Cup and with the first three placegetters guaranteed a spot in the Adelaide Cup field, you can be sure it will be a great race.

The Danny O’Brien trained Second Bullet is on the quick back up from last weekend and is the narrow favourite with UBET. Second favourite is the Tony McEvoy trained Big Memory who is a dual acceptor in the Roy Higgins at Flemington; so all eyes will be on where he runs.

Listed UBET Cinderella Stakes Morphettville 1050m

The Listed Cinderella Stakes for fillies has recently been dominated by two families; the Hayes and the Freedman’s. Since the race moved back to Morphettville in 2006, the eleven editions have been won by the Hayes and Freedman camps three times each.

In the 2017 race, The Hayes’ & Dabernig stable and Lee & Anthony Freedman stables each have one runner each in Prepare to Win and Pageantry respectively.

The last five winners of the Cinderella have all placed in their previous run and for two of those the Cinderella has been their maiden win. Beerzatbernz, It’s a Myth and Spoils are the three fillies in the field who placed in their last start; so going on history they should be right in this.

There are four fillies having their first ever race start in the Cinderella. The last horse to win the Cinderella in their first start was the Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas trained Secret Status in 2011 and paid $10 the win. The training duo will hope that history can repeat itself this year with Glam Guru, who has Clare Lindop in the saddle.

One of the horses to watch will be the Clint McDonald trained Spoils who was scratched from last week’s Blue Diamond and has placings in Black Type sprints including a third behind Formality in the Group Three Chairman’s Stakes. Formality then went on to run third in the Blue Diamond.

Also out of the Chairman’s are the Tony McEvoy trained Time Awaits and Lee & Anthony Freedman trained Pageantry.

With the above form lines, it’s no surprise to see the above three horses are all well fancied in the UBET market.
