Almost 105,000 racegoers enjoyed sensational weather for both days of the 2007 Oakbank Easter Racing Carnival.

The Oakbank club reported a slight decline in crowd numbers (around 5%) which they suggested could have been the result of the numbers of major events in March and the Adelaide Rugby Sevens which was held for the first time on Easter Saturday and Sunday. Regardless of the numbers, the crowd who did attend reported one of the best Oakbank experiences ever and a far cry from the downpour that drenched the crowd at last year’s Easter Monday meeting.

Hot spots during the weekend included the general public grandstand area, Members Car Park, Members Bar and the Pure Blonde Young Members Marquee on Easter Monday. This latter marquee sold out to 1,100 people – a number which organizers had culled by almost half on the year before for better comfort for those attending. Fashions on the Field took place in this marquee for both men and women with prizes including a $2,000 makeover and photography session with style-merchants Studio 2000. Fashions generally across the weekend included an esoteric mix of racing chic and relaxed casual with many people choosing to combine the two. Shorter dresses and funky shirt/tie combinations drove the trend for this year’s fashionistas generally.

On course, Craig Durden took out Saturday’s 3,250m Carlton Draught Von Doussa Steeplechase on favourite Clearview Bay but couldn’t back up the win on the Monday just losing out to Issac Lupton on Blaze in the 4,950m Carlton Draught Great Eastern Steeplechase. The usual Oakbank sights and smells of bacon and eggs cooking on BBQ’s and footballs being punted on the track between races continued as groups of friends and families celebrated Oakbank in the traditional way with an annex set up adjacent their cars and eskies.

It’s another successful Oakbank for 2007 but if you still have the taste for more racing fun, see racingsa.com.au/events for all upcoming feature racedays.

It’s Playtime Trackside.
