Thousands of patrons came by road and train to again enjoy the wonderful setting and abundant facilities of the Strathalbyn Racecourse.
Apart from the obvious great food and Langhorne Creek wine, one of this year’s major highlights was the journey to the track. For the first time in history, hundreds of patrons revelled in the novelty of the SteamRanger Track-to-Track service, which dropped guests from the south and west of the State, right on course. The unique travelling experience also included tips on picking a winner from the legendary John Letts – always the entertainer.
Crowd numbers were again impressive with over 4,000 patrons privy to the exceptional gardens, plush lawn areas and outdoor settings – not to mention the premier selection of wines from the 15 Langhorne Creek wineries set up on course.
Both food and beverage consumption reached an all-time record thanks to the patronage of corporate marquees, dining room guests and general punters, and TAB turnover was also higher than expected.
Speaking of records, it was brilliant to see five local trainers encounter success on the track. Regional race days wouldn’t be the same without the local trainers, so it was great to cheer home some local talent, in particular the Zonte’s Footstep Vignerons Cup winner.
Won by Foolish Lad who was ridden by Ben Claridge and trained by local trainer Shane Oxlade, the photo of the winning connections says it all.
Fred Meuring won the first race with Dennis McMahon, Barry Dunn and Heather Frew also experiencing success throughout the day.
A successful race day is never complete without sponsors and the club is appreciative of the Langhorne Creek Vigneron’s support. The major sponsor Zonte’s Footstep deserving special thanks for their generosity.
President David Croser was thrilled with the support received from sponsors and racegoers. The Langhorne Creek Vignerons Cup is now well established as one of South Australia’s most significant race meetings and that is due in no small amount to our sponsors as well as our dedicated staff who produced a track, lawned area and gardens that is unsurpassed in South Australia.
