Kangaroo Island Cup Carnival, Thursday 14 & Saturday 1616 Februay 2008

Back To TopHistory

The clubs vision is to ensure long-term sustainable growth of the thoroughbred racing industry on Kangaroo Island by providing competitive and attractive events in a unique environment.

The Kangaroo Island racing Club began its days as a picnic meeting held on the beach at Emu Bay, which is on the North Coast of the Island, one hundred and eighteen years ago. Local farmers raced their horses along the beach for a wager. It became an annual event and became one of the main social gatherings on the Island.

In 1940, the Kingscote Council granted the then Kangaroo Island Racing Club a lease over land situated just outside the township of Kingscote, on the banks of the Cygnet River. The land was ideally suited for racing, being flat and very near the facilities of the main Township on the Island, Kingscote.

The Cygnet River land proved to be an ideal venue and members of the Club worked hard to lay out a track and construct permanent Club buildings, some of which are still standing. The social area and facilities were laid out along the bank of the river, which always contained water as there was a nearby weir holding back the fresh water. The shady trees along the river see many families picnicking along the banks during the races and it is always regarded as a great family day out.

There are many stories of great races run on the track between local horses and the nights of celebration that followed!

Local horse owners and trainers ran the Club, but the annual race meeting soon came to the attention of mainland trainers. Many brought their horses over on the Steamship "Karratta" and later the Motor Vessel "Troubridge" ferries to challenge the locals.

The annual race became known as the Kangaroo Island Cup Carnival as the man feature race was for the "Kangaroo Island Cup."

Today the course is a tribute to the Club and many of its features equal those in more populated areas.

The Club was started by the enthusiasm of local people who are still its driving force.
