Jamestown Cup Day, Saturday 29 September 2007.

Jamestown Racing Club

Jamestown is situated 205km north of Adelaide and about one hour’s drive north of the Clare wine growing district.

The journey from Adelaide can be comfortably undertaken in about two and a half hours either through Gawler, Tarlee, Auburn and Clare or via Mallala, Balaklava, Blyth and Clare and then north through Spalding to Jamestown.

The Jamestown Racing Club stages its annual race meeting on the Saturday of the October long weekend and offers patrons a complete ‘picnic’ race meeting through strong fields, total race broadcasting, multi-wagering, good catering services, on-course entertainment and effective administration.

The Club operates a non-TAB race meeting and endeavors to present a professional event to promote the positive aspects of the thoroughbred racing industry to a regional audience.

The Club strives to encourage the general public to participate in the excitement of thoroughbred horse racing in the relaxed atmosphere of a picnic race meeting and to give all owners, trainers, riders and officials the opportunity to enjoy this sector of the industry.

We invite you to explore this web site to learn more about the history of racing in Jamestown and hope to see you at our next race meeting.

The following is an edited extract from “Down The Years”, published in 1936.

“Horse racing has been a popular pastime at Jamestown for over fifty years. The operations of the supporters of the ‘Sport of Kings’ have increased and diminished from time to time, dependent on conditions of prosperity or lean years.

The first mention of a regularly organised Race Club is in a “Review” of January 28th 1885 and it is recorded briefly that the first race meeting of the new club was held on July 24th 1885. No particulars are available and it is most likely that several informal picnic meetings had been held around the town in earlier years.

The ‘Review” records that races were held on Mr R Williams’ farm on April 8th 1886 and again on April 21st 1887 when Mr Richard Correll was Secretary and the stakes 140 pounds”.

Interest in horse racing in the district waned for a short period resulting in the inaugural Jamestown Racing Club folding in 1888 only to be revived in 1889 when at a meeting on February 8th at the Commercial Hotel the Jamestown Jockey Club was formed. The new Club continued to organise race meetings on the properties of members before electing to purchase their own site in 1905.

Racing in South Australia has gone through significant rationalisation since the 1960’s with many smaller clubs falling by the wayside. The 1961 Australian Turf Register lists race meetings in the north of the State at the following locations: Balaklava, Burra, Clare, Gawler, Eudunda, Jamestown, Hawker, Iron Knob, Kadina, Laura, Morgan, Orroroo, Pt Augusta, Pt Pirie, Quorn, Snowtown and Whyalla.

Of those clubs the only ones still in existence are: Balaklava, Clare, Gawler, Jamestown, Hawker, Pt Augusta and Quorn.
