Back to topHistory

The Balaklava Racing Club is based at the town of Balaklava some 100 kilometres north of Adelaide. The Club's facilities are recognized as pre-eminent in the context of thoroughbred racing in country and provincial South Australia.

The Club was founded in 1903, is managed by a committee formed from members of the local and regional community, and has a history of competent and profitable outcomes from its contribution to the sporting ethos of the region and South Australia more generally.

The Balaklava Cup

The inaugural Balaklava Cup was introduced to the South Australian thoroughbred racing calender in 1904 and has been held annually without interruption since that year.

The event is a Listed race, and has maintained that position since 1984, giving it international status in the horse racing industry. Putting aside an event held at Murray Bridge this is a unique position in the context of country based Thoroughbred racing.

The Cup race attracts entries from across Australia and attracts the attention of both leading trainers and jockeys on a persistent basis.

The Cup is without doubt the single largest sporting event of any type held on an annual basis in country and regional areas of South Australia.

At the August 2002 race meeting, stake money of $71,000.00 was offered for the Balaklava Cup race alone, again giving the event a position of leadership in South Australia in the context.

It is worthy of note that the Balaklava racing Club Committee endorses a policy of sourcing its requirements for the Balaklava Cup and other race meetings from the local business community, wherever that is possible, with a resultant financial benefit accruing to the town and region.
