Explosive Garner heads strong Manihi Classic field

A strong field, headed by the explosive Garner, will contest the Listed Furphy Manihi Classic over 1100m at Morphettville tomorrow.

Trained at Morphettville by Gordon Richards, Garner already has an impressive resume, including a win down the Flemington straight during the 2019 Melbourne Cup carnival, and an unlucky third when resuming in a listed race over 1100m at Flemington last month.

The three-year-old gelding has won three of his seven starts, and been placed in the other four, and should be incredibly hard to beat, provided he gets a clear run over the closing stages from barrier one.

Among the hardest to beat will be four-year-old Gododdin, which posted a determined win over 1200m at Caulfield last start, despite being wide for a good portion of trip. The form was franked when I’m Tellin’ Ya won a major race in Victoria last Saturday week.

L’il Kontra, backing up from a narrow loss last Saturday, can be expected to produce her usual solid performance, while Dyslexic is first up for new trainer Brent Stanley, after racing in Group 1 and Group 2 company for the final four starts of her last preparation.

Phillip Stokes-trained Shamino was perhaps the unluckiest runner on the entire Adelaide Cup Day program, finishing fourth behind Mum’s My Hero in the final race of the day. Shamino, who had won her previous four straight, will enjoy a sizeable weight advantage over L’il Kontra from their Adelaide Cup Day meeting. Shamino finished just half a length from the winner that day.

In a field full of depth, other hopes include the well-performed Morvada, last year’s winner Everyday Lady (trained by Will Clarken) and Sun City, which resumes for the McEvoy yard.

Tony McEvoy has trained two past winners of this race, while John Hickmott, Phillip Stokes, Gordon Richards, and the Macdonald-Gluyas stables have all won a Manihi previously.

Jockey Dom Tourneur is chasing his fourth Manihi with Gododdin, while Paul Gatt has won two previously and is riding Amberdi tomorrow.

Selections: 1. Garner; 2. Shamino; 3. Gododdin; 4. Sun City.
