Laelia Stakes a Black Type breakthrough for Jeff and his Pastrami?

Wings of Pastrami can land her first bit of Black Type – and the first for Bordertown trainer Jeff Searle – in tomorrow’s Listed Fleurieu Milk Laelia Stakes for 3YO fillies over 1600m at Morphettville.

Wings of Pastrami has won four of her six starts, including a victory over 1400m at Flemington in December. She returned from a break in fine style at Moonee Valley over 1200m on March 20, and with better luck could have won rather than finish second behind Overkill. Victory would also be the first Black Type success for jockey Sairyn Fawke.

However, the Laelia Stakes features a big field, with plenty of promising and well-bred fillies.

Bonvicini, prepared by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, could start favourite, largely on the strength of her impressive Group 3 Vanity win over 1400m at Flemington two starts back – when she came from last and rounded up the field – rather than her somewhat plain eighth over a mile on March 7. Bonvicini has already won a Listed mile race at SA racing headquarters: the SAJC Morphettville Guineas last September. Jockey Todd Pannell is shooting for successive Laelia Stakes wins after scoring aboard Cosmic Alert for Will Clarken last year.

Snitzel filly Meuse – prepared by Anthony Freedman – is among the fancies for Saturday, but needs to improve on her last-start sixth, when weakening over 1600m at Moonee Valley. Meuse will be ridden by Jason Holder, who won this race on C’est Beau La Vie in 2016.

Morphettville trainer Travis Doudle’s Ethical Solution has done nothing wrong in her racing career to date, which included a strong win over Beauty at Morphettville Parks (1300m) on March 21, when the leading duo spaced their rivals. Ethical Solution is gunning for her fifth-straight win, however barrier 14 will present a tricky proposition for jockey Jake Toerek, who won this race in 2018 on Blue Morpho.

And the chances don’t end there, with La Falaise, Silent Sovereign, Oriental Lily and Morphettville trainer Peter Blanch’s promising Puissance Dusoleil all each-way hopes.

Trainers Tony and Calvin McEvoy have three runners: Zoulah, Silent Sovereign (which contested the VRC Oaks last year and won a Strathalbyn trial recently) and Recognise. Tony won the race as a solo trainer in 2002.

Selections: 1. Wings of Pastrami; 2. Bonvicini; 3. Ethical Solution; 4. Puissance Dusoleil.
