Media Release: COVID-19: TRSA cancels official trials

Official trials will be cancelled as part of new measures introduced today by Thoroughbred Racing SA to further protect the health of industry staff, participants and the wider community.

All official trials have been cancelled from Friday 10th April. A revised schedule of official jump-outs will be released shortly and will be restricted to local trainers.

In addition, TRSA has introduced a range of additional protocols to further strengthen its race day procedures. These include:

  • Two barrier attendants will leg-up all jockeys, thus eliminating the need for trainers to have to enter the mounting yard area;
  • Further areas opened for float and truck parking at Morphettville race meetings to allow for a greater distance between vehicles and essential persons;
  • The deployment of additional TRSA Stewards at training venues and all race meetings to ensure directives on social distancing are being adhered to and that only essential persons are in attendance;
  • All mounting yards at racecourses are being marked prior to race meetings to show participants where to stand to meet social distancing requirements; and
  • All food on racecourses must be pre-packaged, with participants encouraged to bring their own food.

TRSA CEO Nick Redin said the latest measures had been endorsed by all relevant industry stakeholders.

“Our participants have been very good at adapting to and respecting the new protocols we have put in place,” Nick said.

“However, we must remain vigilant and it’s our job as the governing body to continually challenge our own thinking and ensure we are doing everything we can to limit our activities to the bare minimum of participants and reinforce the protocols that govern their activities.

“We will continue to review our protocols, communicate with our interstate colleagues and work closely with relevant government and health authorities to make sure we can keep racing.”
