Update: Eastender Inquiry

The Racing Appeals Tribunal in South Australia today handed down its decision in the “Eastender” matter - (inquiry into the conduct of both Barry Campbell and Tania Coward, on 11 March 2019, which included the racehorse Eastender being injected without Stewards permission on race day at stable premises at Morphettville. Eastender was a late scratching by order of Stewards on the day).

The appeals by Mr. Barry Campbell, the trainer of Eastender and his stable Foreperson, Ms Tania Coward were dismissed in respect of the finding relating to all charges. The Tribunal did however uphold their appeals in respect of penalty relating to some of the charges:

Findings:

Mr. Campbell – Guilty of all three charges

Charge 1 – Race day injection of Eastender (with Potassium).

Charge 2 – Race day treatment of Eastender (with Potassium).

Charge 3 – Conduct intended to corrupt/likely to affect the outcome of a race.

Ms. Coward – Guilty of both charges

Charge 1 – Party to race day injection of Eastender (with Potassium).

Charge 2 – Party to conduct intended to corrupt/likely to affect the outcome of a race.

Penalties:

The penalties were varied by the Tribunal as follows:

Mr. Campbell

Charge 1: A disqualification for a period of 12 months – reduced to 9 months.

Charge 2: A disqualification for a period of 12 months – no reduction -12 months.

Charge 3: A disqualification for a period of 3 years – reduced to 2 years.

Ms. Coward

Charge 1: A disqualification for a period of 6 months – reduced to 4 months.

Charge 2: A disqualification for a period of 18 months – reduced to 12 months.

All penalties were ordered to be served concurrently and commence at midnight on Friday 21 June 2019.
