Lord Reims Stakes preview

Saturday will be the final hit-out for many Adelaide Cup hopefuls as they line up in the Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes.

All eight horses running in the Lord Reims are nominated for the Adelaide Cup and history suggests if you are keen on one of the horses on Saturday, they are worth an investment ahead of next Monday’s 2019 TAB Adelaide Cup.

The last two horses who have won the Lord Reims and then gone on to run in the Adelaide Cup have fared very nicely in the big race being Master of Arts (3rd in 2017) and Taiyoo (2nd in 2015).

We preview the eight runners lining up in Saturday’s feature:

Bondeiger – Lord Reims: $2.20 |Adelaide Cup: $6

Last year’s Launceston Cup winner over 2400m got going late in last month’s Listed Torney Cup when he was huge from the tail to run fourth behind Vengeur Masque. The Adelaide Cup second favourite will have the services of James Winks in the saddle and looks hard to beat on route to the Cup.

Wasabi Bob – Lord Reims: $3.60 |Adelaide Cup: $15

Three wins in a row for the five-year-old who just keeps on improving with each run. His victory in the Listed Birthday Cup last start was impressive and the Adelaide Cup has been his major goal all along. The in-form Raquel Clark has ridden him for each of his last three wins and the pair will be a huge show again on Saturday.

Sylpheed – Lord Reims: $4.60 |Adelaide Cup: $15

Matt Cumani, trainer of last year’s Lord Reims winner Etah James will saddle up the only mare in the race. She’s spent most of her career as a short course horse but has been stepped out over longer distances this preparation and is running well. Was fifth in the Torney Cup coming from the tail of the field and will only carry 53kg on Saturday.

Olympic Academy – Lord Reims: $9 |Adelaide Cup: $26

One of two Grant Young runners on Saturday. He faded over the 2400m on the weekend to finish third behind Franked and Azurite. Loves the Morphettville track proper with two wins and third from four starts and the Cup has been his for a long time. Look for him late on Saturday.

Aagas – Lord Reims: $11 |Adelaide Cup: $51

This horse just keeps running well! Since joining the Ryan Balfour yard he has had 16 starts for four wins and eight placings. Was a solid run for fourth in the Birthday Cup and looks like the further trip will suit. Good each way chance as the horse is always in the finish.

Exalted Lightning – Lord Reims: $21 |Adelaide Cup: $26

Ran fourth in this race last year after winning the Birthday Cup. Went on to run sixth in the Adelaide Cup but hasn’t been able to recapture that form this year. Nominated again for the Adelaide Cup and you can never write off a Grant Young horse in a staying contest.

Azurite – Lord Reims: $19 |Adelaide Cup: $51

Getting the 2600m trip won’t be an issue for the former Irish galloper. On the quick back-up like Olympic Academy and Chris Caserta would have learnt a lot off of his last run aboard the gelding. If he runs well on Saturday, he’s a bit of an Adelaide Cup smoky for Michael Hickmott.

October Date – Lord Reims: $51 |Adelaide Cup: $101

The former South Australian galloper has been around the mark in lower grade races and after his last start tenth in the Naracoorte Cup, he’d need to improve a lot to feature in the finish on Saturday.
