Dennis aiming for Kangaroo Island Cup double

Goolwa based trainer Dennis O’Leary will be shooting for back to back Kangaroo Island Cups when his duo of Table of Wisdom and Gangster’s Run step out in Saturday’s feature.

In the race that stops the Island, O’Leary will be hoping that one of his runners can repeat the feats of last year’s Cup winner Red Menace. Gangster’s Run is following O’Leary’s method from last year, running in the 1880m on the Thursday before lining up in Saturday’s Cup over the same distance. While Gangster’s Run didn’t win Thursday’s race like Red Menace did last year, he did run a nice second which is probably the prefect tune up for a Cup assault on the weekend. Claudia Lions will take the ride on the ten-year-old and she got her eye in on Thursday with a nice win in the first race aboard Red Menace!

His other runner, Table of Wisdom has been in red hot form recording three wins on the trot all over 1500m at Gawler. While he steps out to the 1880m, the natural leader is going to make his own luck from barrier nine and give the rest of the field something to chase. He’ll be in good hands with Kangaroo Island regular and 2017 Cup winner Justin Potter aboard. While he’s going to be carrying a bit more weight than the rest of the field, with the experienced Potter on his back he’s going to be mighty hard to beat on Saturday.

Paula Trenwith is a regular visitor to the island and after recording a training double here over the Australia Day weekend, she returns for the Carnival with Karadoc Kid as her Cup hopeful. As many Cup runners do, Karadoc Kid had a hit out on Thursday running second in the BM70 over 1750m and that should have him primed for Saturday’s Cup.  He was one of Trenwith’s winners at Kingscote last month and is building a nice record at the track. He’ll be ridden by Krystal Bishop who rode a whopping eight winners on the island last year in just three meetings.

Another runner who had an Australia Day weekend win on the island was Scott Whittle’s Tommy Gun. The well-travelled seven-year-old was now won two in a row and is lining up for his sixth career start on the island. Sairyn Fawke will ride the gelding for the eighth time and the two have some kind of record together combining for two wins and three placings from seven starts and they have never finished worse than fourth place.

Country Cup regular Owl on the Prowl makes the trip across Backstairs Passage in the hope of adding some more silverware to his cabinet. He was last seen at Murray Bridge running fourth behind a couple of handy horses in Mista Holyfield and Tahnee Tiara who have both been in great form of late. Apprentice Sophie Logan rode the seven-year-old to victory in the Wycheeproof Cup in November last year and fresh off a double on the Island on Thursday, she’ll be high on confidence.
