Top 5 Moments of SA Derby Day

Day Two of the UBET Festival of Racing was just as memorable as the first as Darren Weir claimed his third successive Group 1 South Australian Derby!

5. One, Two in Race 3 for Tony

Tony McEvoy has two talented four-year-olds on his hands with Manuel and Set to Sparkle. The mare, Set to Sparkle was looking to make it three wins in a row on Saturday and at the turn it looked as if the race was all hers. It wasn’t to be as her stablemate, Manuel flew home to pip the mare by half a length. It was a great result for trainer Tony McEoy as these two talented horses now both have two wins and a second placing from their three runs this preparation. With some good form lines around both, they will both be worth watching in the coming months.

4. Chan the Man for Bertwhistle

With one of the rides of the day, Alfred Chan notched up a Carnival winner aboard the in-form Bertwhistle in the Provincial Super Series Final. Chan produced a perfectly timed run on the five-year-old mare as he weaved through the field to score a commanding win. Chan has now ridden the mare five times for four wins and a third placing and it looks like South East based trainer Darryl Dodson has a very handy mare in his stable.

3. Perfectly Timed win for Peaceful State

He was the shortest priced favourite on the whole Derby Day card and while he left many punters with their hearts in their mouths, Peaceful State showed his class in the final 100m to claim the Listed Adelaide Guineas by a head over an impressive Over Exposure. The mile always looked like it was going to suit Peaceful State on Saturday and the Group 1 placed colt, used every inch of the 1600m to claim victory. In the straight it looked as if Jamie Kah and Over Exposure were about to cause a big upset but John Allen and Peaceful State showed they were all class for a memorable win.

2. Party Time for Lindop & Tequila Time

In one of the real feel good stories of the day, the locally trained Tequila Time made it four wins on the trot and two successive Group 3 victories in the Sires’ Produce Stakes. Tequila Time sat in second behind the Godolphin trained Gododdin for most of the race and at 200m he got going and kicked at the 100m to run on for a great win as the Lindsay Park trained Fundamentalist flew home for second. It was another great ride from Clare Lindop who is making the most of her last few meetings in the saddle!

1. Leicester scores Weir a Derby Hat-trick

Darren Weir can simply do no wrong when it comes to the Group 1 South Australian Derby! The Ballarat based trainer made it three Derby’s in a row with Leicester on Saturday after a beautiful ride from Damian Lane. The $4 favourite was forward in the run and was produced at the perfect time by Lane who gave Weir his third winner for the day and second Group 1 of the carnival! With Goodwood Day still to come, you feel that Darren Weir has a couple more winners to come in the Festival of Racing!
