Strong Support Card for UBET Adelaide Cup Day

While all eyes will be on Monday’s UBET Adelaide Cup there will also be a quality support card on Adelaide’s biggest day of racing. With two Listed races and the $200k Magic Millions 2YO Classic to complement the Group 2 UBET Adelaide Cup, Monday is set to be a fantastic day of racing.

Race 4 – Magic Millions Adelaide 2YO Classic

The girls have had all the success in this race over the last three years with Undoubtable Miss, She’s Positive and Atalanta Miss claiming the last three editions.

This year we are set to have nine fillies and eight boys take to the track with two time Listed winner Nomothaj the best-credentialed runner in the field. The Hayes’ and Dabernig trained filly was impressive winning her last start down the Flemington straight last Saturday, while Darren Weir’s Krone was also a last start winner when she claimed the Listed Cinderella Stakes at Morphettville on Saturday.

Tony McEvoy's Double Denman won nicely in her last start at Morphettville in February, while the only other horse with a win to its name in the field is Patrick Payne’s Zizzis who claimed her maiden victory at Bendigo.

Race 5 – Listed Schweppes C S Hayes Memorial Cup

A field of eight is set for the Listed C S Hayes Memorial Cup named after Australian Hall of Fame trainer, Colin Hayes.

Darren Weir took out this race last year with Burning Front and he will have two runners on Monday including Calibration who will be having his second start in Australia after running 3rd behind Our Peaky Plinders at Pakenham in his Australian debut. The four-year-old has never finished outside of the placings in his six start career. Weir’s other runner will be the top-weight Royal Rapture who finished third in his last start in the Listed Mowbray Stakes in Launceston.

David Hayes will have the opportunity to win the Cup named after his father with Petrology who is now third up from a spell after running third in last year’s Group 1 Toorak Handicap over 1600m. Dwayne Dunn will take the ride on the six-year-old.

Patrick Payne’s Chamois Road enjoys running at Morphettville with two wins and a second from three starts here, while the local chances will be led by Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas’ last start winner Strategic Demand. The training duo combined with jockey Clare Lindop to win this race in 2016 with Royal Rumble. The other local chance will be John Hickmott’s Scratchy Lass who has not missed a placing in her last five starts.

Race 8 – Listed Quayclean Matrice Stakes

The first four past the post in last year’s Matrice Stakes will all line up again in the 2018 edition with Casino Wizard, Riziz, Karlovasi and Royal Rumble set to do battle.

Lee Creek’s Casino Wizard won the race first up last year and will hoping to repeat that effort when he lines up in Monday’s race. Casino Wizard has a 15:5-2-4 record over the Morphettville 1200m and will be hard to beat again on Monday.

2014 winner Riziz is lining up for his fourth attempt at the Matrice after running third in last year’s race and will be partnered by Chris Symons who partnered him to his third placing in the 2014 Group 1 Goodwood.

All eyes will be on Will Clarken’s Steel Frost after an excellent first campaign for the trainer. The Listed City of Marion Stakes winner is first up from a spell as he looks towards further Stakes success in the Autumn. Todd Pannell will once again partner the gelding after a successful Spring Carnival campaign.
