Could a Maiden Deliver Tony McEvoy his First Blue Diamond?

Tony McEvoy has five paid-up runners for Saturday’s Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes but after yesterday's barrier draw, it’s his maiden filly Oohood who is all the rage to claim Victoria’s premier two-year-old race.

While Oohood is still a maiden she’s never missed a place in her three career starts and all run have been at Stakes level. She was only half a length off Enbihaar in the Group 2 Fillies Blue Diamond Prelude a few weeks ago and has never lost a race by more than one length. Luke Currie has ridden the filly in all three starts and will take the ride from Barrier 10.

After her 8.5 length trial win at Morphettville in January, Kinky Boom came out and recorded a 1.75 length victory at Caulfield the weekend following in the Inglis Premier defeating Grand Symphony and Aristocratic Miss. The Filly has also had a swell of support, coming in from $101 to $8.50 after that Caulfield victory.

McEvoy’s final runner in the final field is Run Naan. He won the Group 3 Maribyrnong Plate in November last year defeating Encryption. Since his return he finished third in the January Listed Colts & Geldings Blue Diamond Preview behind Long Leaf and Ollivander before running fifth in February’s Group 3 edition behind Written By and Plague Stone. Andrew Mallyon will continue his association with the colt, after riding him in all four career starts.

Leading Adelaide jockey Jamie Kah will be hoping there is a scratching before Saturday as her mount Aristocratic Miss is first emergency in the Group 1. Aristocratic Miss is still a maiden but has never missed a place in four career starts. Kah is booked for the ride on the McEvoy filly which she has ridden twice for two third placings.

Third Emergency Roobeena is unlikely to get a start for McEvoy, while the Phillip Stokes trained More Than Exceed also missed a start in the final field and is the second emergency for the race. If the colt gains a start, Adelaide hoop Dom Tourneur will take the ride on the last start winner.
