Spring Selections; Melbourne Cup Day

The biggest day on the Australian racing calendar is here and our experts give you their tip for the biggest race of the year and their best bet at Flemington for the day.

Thanks again to Racing.com's Adam McGrath and James Jordan, the voice of South Australian racing Terry McAuliffe and The Advertiser's Lincoln Moore and Ben Scadden.

Group 1 Melbourne Cup

Adam McGrath: Marmelo - No one could miss the run in the Caulfield Cup. His turn of foot was very impressive and with any luck he would have gone closer. The 3200m is ideal and hopefully Hugh Bowman can silence some of the critics questioning his Melbourne form.

James Jordan: Marmelo - European form is good enough to win and he was the best run in the Caulfield Cup.

Terry McAuliffe: Tiberian - Arrives in Australia with great form in France winning four of its past five starts. Same hoop Peslier in all of those runs is here to pilot him. Happy to try him at the $31.

Lincoln Moore: Johannes Vermeer - Eye catching run at his Australian debut before being held up at a crucial stage in the Caulfield Cup.

Ben Scadden: Marmelo - Loved his Caulfield Cup run and ridden by a champion, Hugh Bowman. The Prix Kergolay, which he won two starts ago, is a strong Cup form reference. It's the same race Protectionist and Americain won on their way to Cup glory.

Flemington Best Bet

Adam McGrath: (Race 6) Our Crown Mistress - Her last three wins have all been impressive performances and this race looks to map out perfectly for her. It’s hard to see what can upset her in this field.

James Jordan: (Race 2) Miles of Krishan - First prep for Hayes/Dabernig and first two runs have been great from bad gates. She'll settle closer from the inside draw here and is a great EW bet.

Terry McAuliffe: (Race 4) Yogi - Looks a great race for this talented Darren Weir galloper. Blinkers first time and Craig Williams to ride.

Lincoln Moore: (Race 6) Our Crown Mistress - This filly is flying for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott. Drawn the inside but sure to take running down

Ben Scadden: (Race 2) Invincibella - She's been in brilliant form this campaign. The Waller-Bowman combo is lethal. She's the clear top pick in what looks a relatively soft race.
